A highly detailed 5-inch gauge model of Flying Scotsman in British Railways livery, built by D. Gregson to prototype standards using research drawings taken from the original full-size locomotive.
The locomotive has been constructed with exceptional attention to detail, incorporating extensive rivet-for-rivet reproduction throughout the engine and tender. The model features a walk-through tender, detailed footplate fittings and numerous prototype-specific details faithfully reproduced from the original locomotive.
The locomotive is fitted with a copper, silver-soldered boiler incorporating radiant superheaters. It was designed and constructed with:
The workmanship throughout reflects a serious engineering approach, with the model constructed from research drawings and reference material relating to the full-size locomotive.
Importantly, the locomotive has never been steamed. It has, however, been run successfully on compressed air, providing an opportunity to demonstrate the mechanical operation of the locomotive without it having entered steam service.
A comprehensive collection of research photographs documenting the construction will be provided with the locomotive, together with detailed written schedules and records covering the build. These provide valuable provenance and an insight into the construction methods, engineering and attention to detail involved in producing the model.
Photographs showing the construction of both the locomotive chassis and tender chassis are also available and form part of the supporting build documentation.
A particularly notable aspect of the locomotive’s history is that it received a special invitation from the East Lancashire Railway to be displayed alongside the full-size Flying Scotsman at Ramsbottom.
This represents a unique opportunity for the model to be associated directly with the full-size locomotive it faithfully represents and further adds to its provenance and interest to collectors of fine-scale railway models.
This is an exceptionally detailed 5-inch gauge model of Flying Scotsman, combining substantial engineering quality with extensive prototype research and documentation.
